A Chapter Closes: Eight Years in Japan

Looking back, I barely recognize the person who arrived in Japan eight years ago. I had no real plan, no expectations, just a suitcase and a sense of curiosity about what life on the other side of the world might look like. It was a leap of faith, and it’s safe to say I had no idea just how much that leap would change me.

These years have been nothing short of transformative. I’ve grown in ways I couldn’t have imagined, from navigating cultural contrasts to finding unexpected joys in the simplest of moments. I’ve seen places I’d only dreamed of, embraced traditions that were foreign yet beautiful, and learned to see the world through a completely different lens.

One of the greatest gifts Japan gave me is the people I’ve met along the way. I’ve made lifelong friends. From sharing meals to swapping stories, they’ve been an anchor and a source of endless laughter. These friendships, with different cultures and languages, are treasures I’ll carry with me wherever I go.

But the biggest surprise? Love. Of all the wild, wonderful things Japan gave me, meeting my partner tops the list. Who would’ve thought a Brazilian guy and a French guy would meet and fall in love in Japan? And yet, here we are, with a cat, a collection of memories, and a life built together from shared adventures and quiet moments.

Now, as I pack up my life here (and, yes, those boxes keep multiplying), I’m filled with bittersweet emotions. Saying goodbye to Japan isn’t easy. It’s been my home, my teacher, and the place for some of the best years of my life. But it’s time for a new adventure.

Next stop? Calgary. It’s exciting and nerve-wracking all at once, but this time, I’m not starting alone. My partner, our cat, and I are heading into this next chapter together. I can’t wait to see what’s waiting for us in Canada.

Japan, ありがとう. You will always have a piece of my heart. And to everyone who’s been part of this journey, thank you for shaping these incredible eight years.

Here’s to new beginnings. 💜
